I thought my dad had never collected any Utah Variscite. Then I found a nice little cache in shoebox.
Variscite is not agate or jasper. It's a mineral -- aluminum phosphate. But, as you can see, it does take a beautiful polish and it has a beautiful color.
Almost all Variscite gemstones originate from Utah and from just three locations: Lucin, Snowville, and Fairfield. These three locations produce unique varieties. My dad collected it, but I believe this is Snowville Variscite. Spirit Rock Shop has a nice writeup about it:
This makes Variscite is a rare material, and you don't see it widely available. To save you the trouble, I copied the result of a web search I did. But I encourage you to do your own searches. This is a real steal and I could sell these rocks for quite a bit more, but then I would have to advertise and do SEO for my store and other tasks that I really don't want to do.
The Snowville deposit produced some of the highest grade of natural variscite the world has ever seen. These nuggets look like they even lack the black veins that most has.
Snowville Variscite is relatively hard compared to other two variscite types. The uniform consistency of these pieces would make them easier to work with.Compared to agate, it's not hard so you shouldn't use in, for example, a ring where it would get hard wear.
