The word "chatoyant" must have been invented for Tiger Eye !
Wikipedia describes it this way: "golden to red-brown colour and a silky lustre". From Geology.com, "It is a quartz gemstone ... that forms when fibers of the mineral crocidolite are replaced by silica." So, like Utah Agatized Barite, it's a fossil of a mineral!
Due to it's hypnotic beauty and the fact that it's found in places around the world, and it's mined by the ton, this is one of the most popular gemstones in the world! You can find it everywhere. It's found in Thailand, South Africa, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, India, Korea, Myanmar, Namibia, Spain and even, to a very limited degree, the USA.
See my blog "Reflections" or my blog "I'm confuserd. Can you help?" for more about this. In the "Reflections" blog, you can skip the first two pages and just get to the good stuff on page 3.
Hundreds of ads for beads made from popular and available rocks -- like Tiger Eye -- can be found on Ebay at prices that I just can't bring myself to believe. And like SuperSeven, mystics claim that it can cure anything from warts to baldness. (I don't make that claim. I just claim that it's a beautiful gemstone.) At more reliable web sites, like Amazon and Etsy, you can also find rough to make your own beautiful things. Their prices range from about $10 - $20 a pound. But you don't get to see the rocks until you get them in the mail. At KinesavaROCKS, the exact rock pictured is what you will get.
More than half a century ago, when my dad acquired this rock, Tiger Eye was a was a dazzling, foreign rock that took the whole United States rockhound world by storm. It's simply not found much here, so when it started showing up at dealer booths in rock shows, rockhounds just had to have a chunk. Circumstances suggest that this chunk was mined in South Africa using giant earthmoving equipment to rip it out of Mother Earth.
Because this is one of the rocks where the market has been totally wrecked by third world rock factoriest, my dad probably paid more for
this rock way back then than you will now. I'll send this piece to you for the lowball price of half that: $10 -- but I charge for shipping at $10.60 in a USPS flat rate envelope. I have a "thing" about shipping. Send me a message and ask about it if you want to know more.
Does my "thing" about shipping turn you totally off? Combine this with other rocks sold here in the same order and you'll only pay one shipping charge for the whole kaboodle. (If the rocks you pick will all fit in a USPS padded envelope. If not, I'll give you the choice of switching to a more expensive USPS flat rate medium box or a full refund.
