This Super Seven amethyst is just under 5 ounces. This one has at least two strong golden bands going through it. They're strong enough to visible on the surface. See the first two pictures of the actual rock that you will get.
The current rock for sale here is pictured in the first two photos -- all others are only to illustrate the type -- but they ARE actual rocks from my dad's collection.
A revolution seems to have taken place in the marketplace for Super Seven rocks. The very high prices of a few years ago must have created more thorough searches by dealers to find stuff to sell. Most of what has been scraped up isn't even close to what used to be called Super Seven. Keep in mind that "amethyst" is really just "a violet variety of quartz" (Wikipedia) and is quite common. Without the internal golden bands (which I think I have identified as cacoxenite), it wouldn't be worth much at all. There are a lot of Ebay auctions where the bidding starts at a penny for rocks that are really just violet amethyst.
When I list one of my dad's rocks, I always do my own search to see where the market appears to be. It changes fast. The big difference recently is that China has entered the market in a MASSIVE way. A few months ago, when I wrote the listing description for one my my dad's "Super Seven" rocks, Ebay alone returned 2,800+ results for "super seven crystal". Now, the count is up to 3,300+. I scrolled through about 500 and all but a few were from China. Last year, most of the listings were from Brazil or India. And it looks like they have simply given up on being able to find any of the actual thing.
"The only pieces that had a few crystal needles were small, pale, and very expensive. The first one I found was listed at $320 for a finished piece about 1 1/4 inches long. Nothing even close to my dad's rocks was priced at less than several hundred dollars."
(I wrote that last year. This year, I can't find ANYTHING that looks like my dad's Super Seven.)
These are NOT what one of my customers called, "Duck Rock" -- Full of Quacks. This is a river-tumbled, smooth rock and you can only see what it's really like after you cut it. The concept of river tumbled rocks isn't at all unique. For example, all Montana agate is that way: smooth, round stones that conceal their inner beauty.
I don't believe there is any other source for river tumbled Super Seven like this for sale. I encourage you to search and prove it to yourself. I've certainly never seen it. (Addendum -- I finally found ONE. See the essay linked below.)
My dad must have found a source of these rocks many decades ago. I only have a few more like this and I have no idea where my dad got them. So, to ensure that I have some to sell in future years, I sell them one at a time and only every now and then.
I wrote a blog essay about Super Seven that is posted here. Check it out:
