This rock has been a popular export, more to Europe than the US, from North Africa since the middle of the previous century.
I think my dad acquired this agate decades ago ... probably at the Quartzite rock show in trade for some of his great Utah rocks. This agate is found in the Sidi Rahal region about 35 miles east of Marrakesh in the shadow of the Atlas Mountains of Morocco. The agate is named for the ancient Berber people who live throughout North Africa.
Berber agate is found as nodules and is known for bright salmon, orange, and red markings. Berber agate makes great cabbing stock because it takes a great polish and usually has no cracks.
Berber is found in an area approximately 25 to 30 miles long and about 3 miles wide. The layer within it is usually red or red-brown due to a concentration of iron compounds.
I ground this one down to where the red agate starts so you could see just what it's made of.
If you only order this item, the shipping is a big part of your cost. But if you send me a message telling me what you want, you can save money by combining several items in the same order.
I do a lot of my business through custom orders and I love to work with people to get them just the right rocks they're looking for. I will pack as many as possible into the same package.
