I'm not a great rockhound ... That was my dad!

That's why I list a lot of "Mystery Rocks". My dad might have been able to tell you something about them, but I can't. I'm ususally just confused about the "type" of rock. Is this "Benny Hill Agate" or "Snake Hollow Jasper"? I'm not even able to tell whether this one is a fossil of something or a nodule of something else. I thought of trying to knock a corner off, but it's fairly small anyway and I think all that would tell me is that it is a chunk of chalcedony (silica based rock) and it would destroy a lot of the character of the rock.

After careful examination, here's what I could see.

* It's covered with some sort of coating, very similar to what is found on Montana Agate. That makes it very hard to see anything about the interior.

* I can see banding underneath the coating. That makes it more likely to be a nodule rather than a fossil.

* On two surfaces, It appears a little like a segment of petrified wood or something similar.

* The curving surface and the mottled dimples on the surface remind me of the ouside of some kind of organic fossil.

Want a real puzzler. Here it is!

All I ask is pictures if you discover something great.
