A "Slab and Cab" Chunk for Real Rockhounds
Since Montana Agate has bounced down the Yellowstone River for a few hundred miles, nearly all of it is small to medium size, round chunks. That usually eliminates the cracked and weak rocks. This is a good example.
These sweet rocks are from the Yellowstone River highlands in Montana. My dad picked this up over fifty years ago. Finding a rock like this today is a rare event. The dramatic translucent agate combined with the consistent hard rock make Montana Agate one of the most popular rocks in the US West. This piece was broken (naturally -- this is the way my dad found it) so the beauty inside shows.
There is also a shipping charge - $10.60. (I have a "thing" about shipping. Send me a messaqe if you want to know more.) And if you want to combine this with other orders, I can usually ship them together with just one shipping charge.
My theory is that Montana Agate weathered out of formations that don't even exist today. Since they came from distant and different places, they're not all the same. The only really common feature is that they're all river rounded and they usually have a white coating deposited during those millenia in the river that makes it hard to see what's actually inside. But this one has a break that reveals all it's beauty.
The first three pictures are the actual rock you will get. The other pictures are examples of other Montana Agates I have shipped to other customers.
I was just a kid when my dad picked this rock up. If you're interested in reading about what that was like, I've written the story at my blog page here: Check it out.
