Crinoids are among the most ancient fossils but "sea lillies" continue to live today. These fossils are undoubtedly hundreds of millions of years old.
Solid and crack free, this slab is polished on both sides for display. Or, you could decide to make your own cabs. Check out the cabs made by my friend Ken. Ken also tumbled the golden swirl shown.

Since I haven't seen this rock anywhere else and I never learned anything about it from my dad, it has been a struggle to figure out what it actually is. The critical clue to identify it came when I found a small chunk of this rock that clearly shows a "crinoid" (a primitive animal that lives in the ocean) fossil. You can see the key fossil chunk in the pictures above. The orbs in this rock are cross-sections of crinoid stems.
