Sometimes, it’s really worth it to get up before the sun when the sun makes an entrance like this.
This particular sunrise was taken in the morning when this was posted -- 23 November 2024. It only lasted maybe ten minutes at the most.
In cities (and I used to live in one), the color in the sky is often due to the pollution in the air. Here in Zion, it’s the sun reflecting the red cliffs on wispy clouds in the sky.
Here’s the same scene on the same day with the afternoon sun.
Sometimes, the right place can be pretty scary. Here’s a rockfall at the head of Surprise Wash just behind my house. This is the way Zion Canyon was created.
Here’s the brush fire in Dalton Wash just a few years ago. Again, taken from my back yard. The fire crews got it under control not long after this was taken.
It doesn’t snow a lot here, but like the rain in summer all seems to come at once, the snow in winter often does too. But it’s usually gone in just a few hours.
The sun, clouds, and the canyon sometimes combine for spectacular effects.
I captured all these images with my phone or a really cheap camera. After living here for a few decades, I’ve learned that you just have to be in the right place at the right time to see these scenes.
