The “Crown Jewels” of my dad’s creations are his butterflies. I’ve seen a number of people use my dad’s template to make their own but Steve’s are the best I have seen. (Other than my dad’s, of course.)
My dad had templates made from his butterflies. Steve was a good friend to my dad and got his butterfly template directly from him. Steve is a “Great Rockhound”— like my dad.
My dad crafted everything about his butterflies. He drew the shape and had templates made, he hand-crafted the mountings. The rocks in my dad’s butterflies are all dinosaur bone. My dad’s butterflies are all broaches, although I have converted one into a bolo tie that I wear. Steve’s butterflies are free standing art.
Steve wrote to me about his butterflies …
I enjoy doing them so much and always think of your Dad when finishing them up. After all .... his butterflies were the first I had ever really seen and knew I wanted to do some as well. … I try my best to get matching sets but it's amazing how much a rock will change from slice to slice.... Especially if it's agate.
